Cycling and Enforcement

|

The debate over cyclists’ safety has been sidetracked into a discussion about enforcing the wearing of helmets. Cyclists should wear helmets: my children always do and tell me off if I forget – but it would be a waste of police time to prosecute people for failing to wear them.

Cyclists also need to follow the highway code – but the main threat to cyclists is from careless drivers and improving driver awareness and thoughtfulness is what matters. We have cycled in the Netherlands and Canada and in both countries drivers make a point of giving way to cyclists whereas here many drivers seem to think that saving a couple of seconds on their journey is more important than whether someone gets knocked off their bike.

As drivers, we each need to do our bit to make things better in North Wales.

What do you think?
