I wrote this article as Chief Executive of North Wales Police Authority. Our initial focus had been on seeking appropriate checks and balances – safeguards to ensure that a Police & Crime Commissioner would work with other agencies and in particular with the Police & Crime Panel. When the UK Government rejected this approach I turned my mind to defining what “good” might look like. The reaction of everyone who read the article was to say “you should stand” so after careful thought I resigned to put myself forward for the Labour nomination. I secured the Labour nomination but narrowly lost the election…
